James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President. Western Reserve Eclectic Institute was founded by the Disciples of Christ in 1850 in Hiram, Ohio, as a nonsectarian, coeducational college. James A. Garfield was a student at the Institute from 1851-1853 before completing his education at Williams College. Garfield then returned to teach at Western Reserve Eclectic Institute before becoming its Principal. Western Reserve Eclectic Institute changed its name to Hiram College in 1867.
